Become a DAR Member
Our chapter members welcome guests and prospective members to our meetings. If you believe you have a patriot in your family tree, or have located an ancestor who was a Revolutionary patriot, we can help you complete your research and your membership application.
Would you like to know more about the DAR? |
The National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, has posted a series of videos on YouTube, celebrating our organization's historic preservation, educational, and patriotic work. These videos provide a brief introduction to the work of Today's DAR, and will introduce you to some of the dynamic women who are part of our extraordinary service organization. |
Eligibility for membership
Any woman is eligible for membership who is no less than eighteen years of age and can prove lineal, blood line descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American Independence. She must provide documentation for each statement of birth, marriage, and death. No chapter may discriminate against an applicant on the basis of race or creed.
A complete list of eligibility information is available on the NSDAR Become A Member web page. On this page, you will also find complete information on the four step process to become a member, along with a number of helpful links.
Beginning your research
There are several research sources available to you through the NSDAR.
1) Check the list of patriot ancestors on this site. These patriots were the ancestors of our chapter members, and our registrar has information on their descendants, along with documentation of the generations.
2) Ask our registrar if there is a genealogical workshop scheduled in our area. If so, there will be experienced genealogists available to help you research your ancestors.
3) Another resource is the DAR Genealogical Reseach System (GRS) on the NSDAR web site. The GRS is a combination of several extensive genealogical databases and contains names of Revolutionary patriots, both men and women, whose service (between 1775 and 1783) has been established by the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution. Additional information available may include: dates and places of birth and death, name(s) of wife (wives) or husband(s) and children, rank, type of service and the state where the patriot lived or served.
Please remember that not every Revolutionary patriot is included in this list, but only those who are ancestors of NSDAR members. A recent addition to the GRS is the ability to order and download copies online of any application(s) that you believe will help in your own research and application.
Contacting the General William Livingston Chaper for assistance
Our Chapter Registrar, Gladys Haynes, can help with research to document a patriot in your family. If you would like to contact her, we ask that you send us an email form and provide as much information as possible.
